One day at a time

In the doorway to my dad’s kitchen has always hung a sign that reads “one day at a time”. When I was young, I remember asking my dad on more than one occasion what that meant. And every time his answer would be “you’ll understand when you’re older”. Well as an 8 year old little girl, older seemed very far away and an answer like that was far from satisfying.

But here I am, older, and I couldn’t have a better understanding of the phrase. It’s so easy to get caught up in our to do lists that we are always thinking 5 steps ahead to stay on top of things. In college more than ever I’ve learned the importance of being in the moment, of focusing on one thing at a time, and most importantly to not over stress about the future. There’s far more to life than focusing on what’s next. Everything that’s supposed to happen will happen.

The more we live for the future the less we live in the present. So be in the moment and always remember to take life one day at a time.
